Known as Australia’s cultural capital, this bustling city combines modern life with tradition, creating a sense of discovery at every turn. Getting around couldn’t be easier… Melbourne provides free tram rides within the city center, known as the Free Tram Zone. The most iconic is the City Circle Tram, with its charming, vintage carriages offering a convenient and free way to explore central Melbourne.

In 1835, John Batman, a wealthy European settler from Tasmania (back then called Van Diemen’s Land), arrived at Port Phillip Bay with the goal of acquiring land from the Aboriginal people for farming. In a controversial agreement, he negotiated with the local Wurundjeri people, offering them goods such as blankets, flour, and tools in exchange for about 600,000 acres of land. Over time, the local population was displaced as more settlers moved in, and this marked the beginning of the city of Melbourne.

As the sun sets, the streets of Melbourne come alive with people. I’m struck by how sociable everyone is; it’s hard to find a street or restaurant without locals and tourists mingling together. The city is incredibly vibrant. If you’re searching for a meeting point before your night out, look no further than Flinders Street Railway Station. With its stunning Victorian-era architecture and distinctive facade, it’s the ideal spot to soak in the surrounding cityscape and greet your friends, with Federation Square and the Yarra River just a short walk away. This station beautifully embodies the blend of Melbourne’s past and present.

From classic works to contemporary pieces, there’s something for everyone to admire. No, this little bird isn’t part of the artwork. It was simply perched quietly, likely trying to keep warm, in the pool in front of the National Gallery of Victoria on an Autumn evening.

Melbourne is home to iconic arcades that showcase magnificent architectural heritage. Your trip to the city wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Royal Arcade and Block Arcade. These arcades feature a blend of high-end boutiques, cafes, and specialty shops, along with some hidden gems, making them a favorite spot for both shopping and sightseeing. One hidden gem you can discover in the Royal Arcade is the mythological giants “Gog and Magog.” Have you ever heard of them? No travel article is complete without a visit to a library. State Library Victoria, an iconic historic building and one of the oldest libraries in Australia, is a true sanctuary for book lovers.

Although Australia is a relatively young country situated in the middle of an ocean and thousands of miles from conflict zones, this distance hasn’t kept it from engaging in wars. Many of you likely recall the Gallipoli campaign during World War I, which was one of the bloodiest battles for both the Ottomans and ANZACs (the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps). The Shrine of Remembrance, located just about a mile from the city center, contains numerous artifacts from the wars Australia has participated in. The boat you see in the picture above is a reconstructed landing craft made from original pieces used during the Gallipoli campaign.

The Shrine of Remembrance stands as a powerful reminder of the conflicts and wars in which Australian servicemen and women have participated. Be sure to climb to the top for a stunning view of downtown Melbourne from this amazing vantage point (last picture).

Before my trip to Melbourne, I thought there were only two types of football: American and European. However, I quickly learned I was mistaken. While walking back to my hotel after a long day of exploring, I noticed a crowd heading toward Marvel Stadium right next to where I stayed. Curious about the occasion, I asked a local what was going on, and he informed me there was a football game taking place. When I asked whether it was American or European football, he replied, “Neither; it’s Aussie football. (with a heavy Australian accent of course)” I thought, yeah, like American football wasn’t already confusing enough! So, I pulled out my phone, bought a ticket for the game, and enjoyed three hours of exciting chaos. Honestly, it was a fun night! : )

In conclusion, my thoughts on Melbourne are that it truly is a vibrant city. Food, music, and art play a significant role in the lives of its residents. You’ll encounter people from a variety of cultures throughout the city, creating a rich and unique tapestry. If you have a few extra days to spend in Australia, be sure to include Melbourne on your itinerary.
